Proposal Acronym: CARATE

Proposal Title: Collaborative Augmented Reality Astronaut Training Experience :woman_astronaut:t4: :rocket:

Proposal Summary: CARATE seeks to introduce XR learning for Industry 5.0 to the aerospace industry, focusing on scaffolding humans with Augmented Reality and wearable technology to achieve higher levels of performance. CARATE strives to innovate XR learning in Industry 5.0 to meet these expectations by focusing on three areas: (a) making XR content creation faster, more collaborative, and more automated, (b) seamlessly integrating human instruction and AR guidance for highly engaging, blended learning, and (c) developing skills and XR literacy for European astronauts and their trainers. CARATE will build on MirageXR, the European b2c open-source flagship initiative for learning with XR, originally conceived in the WEKIT H2020 project, now maintained by the project’s spin out company and lead contractor for this proposal. WEKIT is supported by a growing software development community with 45+ members. The unique approach of CARATE is that the learners, i.e., end-users from the aerospace training organisation ALTEC, will be directing the product design in an intensive co-design partnership with WEKIT, the technology provider. The development will be validated in evaluation pilots at ALTEC premises in Italy and at the ESA European Astronaut Centre premises in Germany. Exploitation as a joint venture is planned, bringing XR learning to the space agencies and companies in the sector. The aerospace industry is a beacon for manufacturing at large, contributing, e.g., with satellite technology significantly to economic growth in Europe. With CARATE, we aim to adapt and extend MirageXR to fulfill the needs of the aerospace industry and by building components for XR learning for Industry 5.0 which supports astronauts with XR training in assembly, maintenance, repair, and operations.

Pioneering innovation in XR technology requires not just technical expertise but also a strong support system. The OC1 - CARATE projects within XR2Learn have demonstrated that having access to a dedicated platform and an engaged community can make all the difference in overcoming the complex challenges of cutting-edge development.

Collaboration and knowledge-sharing create an environment where teams can accelerate their progress, avoid common pitfalls, and leverage shared resources effectively. This is especially important in XR, where foundational systems are often complex and time-consuming to build from scratch.

From a developer’s point of view, we wanted to understand what makes XR2Learn truly valuable. So, we asked the developers involved:

Reflecting on your journey with XR2Learn, what aspects of the platform or community have been most beneficial to your development process?
